India’s Budget 2025: Advancing Healthcare Access, Affordability And Innovation

The Union Budget 2025-26 introduces decisive reforms to build up India's healthcare system and pharmaceutical industry. Healthcare accessibility and infrastructure receive substantial government support through the 11% rise in budgetary funding allocation. Eliminating customs duties on 36 life-saving drugs alongside concessional duties covering six more treatments will lower prices for vital treatments of rare diseases, cancer, and chronic medical conditions. Patients in disadvantaged areas will gain better access to cancer care through the new program, which establishes 200 day-care cancer centers in every district hospital. The Indian government aims to create 85,000 additional medical seats while adding 10,000 novices annually to respond to the expected demand for healthcare specialists. The government intends to support 10,000 scholars at IITs and IISc through the PM Research Fellowship scheme to enhance cutting-edge research in medical technology and pharmaceuticals. The emphasis on medical tourism and private-sector-led research and development further highlights the government’s vision for India as a healthcare innovation hub. By promoting the "Heal in India" initiative and easing visa norms, the country is set to attract patients worldwide seeking high-quality, affordable medical treatments. Additionally, the ₹20,000 crore allocation for private-sector R&D will likely stimulate innovation in diagnostics, therapeutics, and biotechnology.
