Gaza Vaccinates 591,700 Children in Emergency Polio Campaign

The second phase of an emergency polio vaccination campaign in Gaza starts on October 14, 2024, aiming to vaccinate 591,700 children under ten with a second dose of the novel oral polio vaccine type 2 (nOPV2). The first phase, held from September 1-12, 2024, vaccinated 559,161 children, around 95% of the target population. At least two doses are required to stop poliovirus transmission, and in this round, vitamin A will also be given to boost immunity in children aged two to nine.

Led by the Palestinian Ministry of Health, in partnership with WHO, UNICEF, UNRWA, and others, the campaign aims to prevent further spread of the polio outbreak detected in July 2024. Mobile teams will target children in shelters and camps, focusing on those missed in the first round. Despite significant logistical challenges, including damaged infrastructure, the first round was successful due to strong community support and a resilient health workforce.

More than 800 social mobilizers will raise awareness via radio, SMS, and digital channels. Logistical preparations, including training and vaccine storage, have been enhanced. A humanitarian pause is essential to ensure the safety of health workers and families during the campaign, especially in areas outside previous pauses, where some children were missed.

WHO and UNICEF urge all parties in the conflict to ensure these pauses for the safe delivery of vaccines, as new evacuation orders threaten access to health facilities.
