1. Liberty Bell

📍 Liberty Bell Center, 526 Market Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA

Open: Everyday from 9 am to 5 pm (Open till 7 pm in July & August)

The first thing to make sure you do when in Philly is to visit the Liberty Bell, which is kind of a big deal on its own! Known for its iconic crack and rich history, it’s one of the most recognizable symbols of American independence. You’ll find it at the Liberty Bell Center in Independence National Historical Park, where you can check out exhibits and a short video that walks you through the bell’s fascinating past including how that crack came to be! 

Admission is free, though you’ll need to go through a security check, and there might be a bit of a wait since it’s a popular attraction. While you’re there, enjoy a relaxed stroll through the park and explore other nearby historic sites like Independence Hall, the Free Quaker Meeting House, and Franklin Court.

2. Reading Terminal Market

Open: Everyday from 8 am to 6 pm

Just a few steps away from the Pennsylvania Convention Center, Reading Terminal Market has been a local favorite since 1893, and it’s easy to say why! With rows of vibrant food stalls, it’s the perfect place to explore everything from fresh seafood and sharp cheddar to deli classics and warm baked goods. If you crave for something regional, then you can try Pennsylvania Dutch staples like hard pretzels with mustard, hearty chicken pot pie, or the famously unique scrapple. 

You can pick up a quick bite to go, or take your time and grab a seat at one of the many restaurants offering everything from Thai and Chinese to classic Italian. And if you still have room after all the tasty treats, swing by Bassetts — they’ve been serving up scoops of ice cream here since day one.

3. Philadelphia Museum of Art

A visit to the Philadelphia Museum of Art isn’t complete without a quick jog up those iconic 72 steps. Channel your inner Rocky Balboa (who did this in a movie), take in the sweeping view of the city, and maybe even strike a victorious pose, it’s a bit of a tradition. Once you've caught your breath, head inside to explore a world-class collection of over 240,000 works of art. From local legends like Thomas Eakins and Alexander Calder to European masters like Van Gogh and Monet, there’s everything to be curious about!  

You’ll also find bold and quirky pieces like Marcel Duchamp’s “ready-mades” and plenty more. Tickets are around $20 and give you access for two consecutive days, not just to the main building, but also the nearby Perelman Building and Rodin Museum. A perfect blend of art, culture, and just a dash of movie magic.

4. Franklin Institute

Open: Everyday from 9:30 am to 5 pm

The Franklin Institute is where science and innovation meets hands-on fun, which is a perfect place for curious minds of all ages. Whether you're wandering through the planetarium, catching a film at the IMAX theatre, or checking out vintage aircraft in the aviation hall, there’s something fascinating around every corner. For a little extra adventure, step into the virtual reality zone or try your puzzle-solving skills in one of the escape rooms.

In addition, don’t miss the brain exhibit where you can literally walk through a giant neural network, complete with lights and sounds that respond to your every move. Tickets are around $23, and it's you know what? It's a smart idea to book your tickets online, ahead of time to skip the lines. 

5. African American Museum

Open: Wednesday–Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm & Sunday from 12 noon to 5 pm

Step into the African American Museum in Philadelphia for a powerful and inspiring journey through history, culture, and art. Explore its rich permanent collection, engaging interactive displays, and rotating special exhibits. 

You’ll also see the striking photographs capturing key moments in history, like the 1963 March on Washington and rallies led by Martin Luther King Jr. Make sure to plan to spend about an hour or more here so that you can take your time to observe it all in! Tickets are around $14 for adults, or you can visit at no extra cost with a Philadelphia sightseeing pass.

6. Delaware River Sunset Cruises

For a fresh perspective on Philadelphia, hop aboard a sunset cruise along the Delaware River. It’s a relaxing way to take in the city’s skyline as it starts to sparkle, with sights like the Ben Franklin Bridge, Camden Waterfront, and the Port of Philadelphia along the way. Most cruises last about an hour, though you can stretch out the experience with a dinner cruise — complete with great food, live music, and a little dancing under the stars. If you’re visiting around early July, you’re in for a treat. The skyline and bridges light up in red, white, and blue for Independence Day, adding a little extra magic to the view.

7. One Liberty Observation Deck

Open: Daily from 10 am to 8 pm (Open till 9 pm from May 1 to September 30)

For one of the best views in town, head up to the 57th-floor observation deck and take in Philly from above. With a full 360-degree view, you’ll spot landmarks like City Hall, the Ben Franklin Bridge, and plenty more spread out beneath you. Inside, there’s more than just the view — explore interactive exhibits and fun facts about the city’s architecture, street art, history, and even Benjamin Franklin himself. Admission is around $15, with discounts for kids and families. Plus, free hourly tours are included with your ticket, offering a little extra insight as you take it all in from the top.

8. Elfreth's Alley

Step onto Elfreth’s Alley and you’ll feel like you’ve wandered into a time capsule. This charming cobblestone street is the oldest continuously lived-in street in America, dating back to the early 1700s. Lined with 32 beautifully preserved homes, it offers a rare glimpse of what everyday life looked like for Philly’s early working-class residents.

Most of the houses are still private homes, but you can pop into the Museum House at 124-126 to learn more about the street’s history and the people who lived there. For something extra special, visit during the first weekend of June — that’s when the residents open their doors to the public, giving curious visitors a peek inside these historic homes.

9. Philly Cheesesteak

Philadelphia has plenty of delicious eats, but if there’s one thing you have to try before leaving, it’s the legendary Philly cheesesteak. This classic sandwich—piled high with thin-sliced beef and gooey melted cheese—is a local favorite, and everyone in town has their go-to spot. 

Ask around and you’ll hear some passionate opinions, but you can’t go wrong starting with the iconic rivals: Pat’s King of Steaks and Geno’s, both located in South Philly. Other must-try spots include Shanks Original, a local staple on S. Columbus Boulevard for over 50 years, and the original Tony Luke’s on Oregon Avenue. No matter where you land, you’re in for a seriously satisfying bite of Philly pride.
